Top 10 Halal Restaurant Picks in Houston

A playful, opinionated roundup of ten well-loved halal spots across Houston, from Pakistani goat chops to hibachi to a food truck doing serious skewers.

Updated April 26, 20266 min read

Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.

Houston quietly has one of the deepest halal food scenes in the country. Hundreds of halal restaurants are spread across the metro, and the range is unusual for a US city: Pakistani karahis and biryanis in Hillcroft, shawarma counters in Westchase, Arab grills along Richmond, Afghan kebabs out toward Katy, halal steakhouses and hibachi spots in Sugar Land, Somali and West African kitchens in the northside, BBQ joints smoking brisket and ribs halal, plus a growing wave of halal sushi, Thai, Chinese, Korean, and Mexican. Very few American cities can put that kind of spread on a map.

A quick note before the list. We're not a halal certification body, and reasonable Muslims disagree on what counts as halal (hand-slaughtered vs. machine, same-kitchen cross-contamination, serving alcohol, zabiha sourcing, and so on). Every restaurant below is well-known in the community as halal, but do your own due diligence and ask the questions that matter to you.

With that out of the way, here are ten picks, in no particular order.

Barbar Mediterranean Grill

The grilled chicken is the move. Nobody in the city sauces it up quite like them, and you'll get it on the first bite. There's a tang and a depth to it that feels like someone's grandmother has been tuning the recipe for thirty years. The shawarmas are also genuinely excellent, which is a high bar in a city with this many shawarma counters. Stuffed generously, crisped on the edges, served with garlic sauce that people quietly take home with them. If it's your first visit, get the chicken plate and a shawarma wrap and don't overthink it.

Tourão Brazilian Churrasqueria

Quick note: Tourão does have a few non-halal items on the menu and serves alcohol. Skip it if you're uncomfortable with that. Otherwise, this is one of the more fun meals in Houston.

Tourão serves ten halal meat cuts, all you can eat, brought to your table on skewers by gauchos who slice it off in front of you. It's the full Brazilian churrascaria experience: filet, ribeye, picanha, ribs, lamb chops, shrimp, and more, for $57 a head. An unlimited salad bar comes with it, and the cheese bread (pão de queijo) is dangerously good. Try not to fill up on it, because you came here for the meat and the gauchos will keep coming. If the full churrasco feels like too much, the Gaucho Special is a slightly cheaper option with a reduced cut selection. Bring an appetite, bring friends, and pace yourself.

Bonsai Japanese

Two locations, and we'd point you to the Sugar Land one. Grab a seat at the hibachi table so you get the live cooking show, because that's half the reason to go: the onion volcano, the knife work, the shrimp toss toward your mouth. Order the filet mignon and the Philly cheesesteak sushi roll. Yes, the Philly cheesesteak sushi roll. It's thinly sliced steak and melted cheese rolled up with rice and seared, and it shouldn't work as well as it does. Trust us.

Aga's Restaurant & Catering

Voted best Indo-Pak in the United States, and the crown is well-earned. The goat chops are what Aga's is famous for: charred on the outside, tender on the inside, marinated in something that feels like it took a day to prepare. Also order the butter chicken, which is rich without tipping into too-sweet territory, and the karahi, which is the dish to split across the table. Come hungry, because the portions are not subtle, and neither is the spice level if you ask for it. On a Friday night you'll wait for a table. Worth it.

Q's Deli

Underrated Houston sandwich spot. Get the Q's Best, which is the house flagship and the thing most regulars are ordering, or the classic Club Sandwich, piled with halal turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato on toasted bread. Great lunch stop, no fuss, fast turnaround, the kind of place you end up coming back to more than you expected. A reliable weekday default when you don't want to think too hard about food.

Levant BBQ

Arab-owned Texas BBQ, which is exactly as great a combination as it sounds. The ribs and the brisket are the headliners. Smoked low and slow, halal, with the kind of bark and pull that holds its own against Houston's non-halal BBQ heavyweights. Get a tray with ribs, brisket, a side of mac, and some of the Arab-inflected sides they've added to the menu. A real Texas-Muslim crossover moment, and a reminder that halal BBQ in Houston has officially arrived.

Chai Shai

Desi cafe energy with a menu that rewards repeat visits. Order the pizza paratha, which is exactly what it sounds like and better than it has any right to be. The hunter beef sandwich is the sleeper hit: spiced, cured-style beef on soft bread, no fanfare, deeply good. The meethi puri is the dessert closer. Pair it all with chai, grab a corner seat, and plan to stay a while. It's the kind of place you go for a thirty-minute snack and leave two hours later.

Jade Ly

The halal Chinese spot that keeps Houston Muslims coming back. Basil chicken, spicy Korean beef, jalapeño chicken, and Mongolian beef are the order. The basil chicken has real wok heat and fragrant basil layered through it. The spicy Korean beef hits that sweet-spicy-umami trifecta. The jalapeño chicken is for the people who actually want to feel something, and the Mongolian beef is the crowd-pleaser for everyone else at the table. Fast, consistent, and scratches a very specific craving nothing else in the city quite hits.

Bundu Khan

Classic Pakistani, done right. Get the chicken tikka, which comes out sizzling and charred the way it's supposed to. The Bihari kebab is the standout order: thinly sliced beef marinated in a spice blend that's been refined over generations. Add the halwa and fresh paratha to round it out. It's the kind of meal that reminds you why Pakistani food is a whole cuisine, not just a section of the halal menu. Come with people, order family-style, get messy.

Al Mankal Grill

A food truck, and one of the best-kept secrets on this list. The grilled fish is outstanding: whole fish, seasoned, charred, served with rice and salad in a to-go container that somehow tastes like a sit-down meal. The mixed grill platter is stacked with kebabs, kofta, and shish taouk. Every skewer they serve is worth ordering, full stop. If you've never eaten Arab grilled fish out of a Houston food truck on a plastic fork in your car, this is your sign. Follow their location on social because the truck moves.
