Best Public Schools in Houston: Top Elementary, Middle, and High Schools
Niche's 2026 top 10 ranked public schools in the Houston metro by category, with neighborhoods mapped for relocating Muslim families.
Houston's public school landscape is one of the strongest reasons families across the country end up relocating here. Three districts in particular dominate the metro's rankings — Katy ISD west of the city, Tomball ISD northwest, and Houston ISD's magnet programs in the Inner Loop — each with a distinct identity and admission pathway.
This guide compiles Niche's 2026 rankings of the top 10 public schools in the Houston metro for each grade band, with each school mapped to one of our 10 neighborhood guides where applicable. For Muslim families weighing where to live, school zoning is one of the biggest variables in the relocation decision — these rankings are a starting point, not a final answer.
A note on magnet schools
Three of the top high schools — Carnegie Vanguard, Kinder HSPVA, and DeBakey High School for Health Professions — are Houston ISD magnet programs that require an application and are not zoned to a specific address. Living in HISD's footprint qualifies a student to apply, but admission is competitive. Spring Branch Academic Institute (SBAI) is similarly a gifted-and-talented magnet within Spring Branch ISD that appears on all three lists because it serves K–12. None of these are schools you simply move into.
The remaining schools in this guide are zoned — meaning they serve a specific geographic boundary, and buying or renting a home within that boundary is what gets a student in. If a specific school is non-negotiable for your family, work with a real estate agent who knows the zoning maps inside out.

Best Public Middle Schools in Houston

Best Public High Schools in Houston
| Rank | School | District | Neighborhood |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carnegie Vanguard High School | Houston ISD | Medical Center / Inner Loop |
| 2 | Seven Lakes High School | Katy ISD | Katy |
| 3 | Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts | Houston ISD | Medical Center / Inner Loop |
| 4 | DeBakey High School for Health Professions | Houston ISD | Medical Center / Inner Loop |
| 5 | Obra D. Tompkins High School | Katy ISD | Katy |
| 6 | Clements High School | Fort Bend ISD | Sugar Land |
| 7 | Kerr High School | Alief ISD | Alief / Westchase |
| 8 | Alief Early College High School | Alief ISD | Alief / Westchase |
| 9 | Spring Branch Academic Institute | Spring Branch ISD | Memorial / Energy Corridor |
| 10 | Cypress Woods High School | Cypress-Fairbanks ISD | Cypress |
Pattern: The high school list looks fundamentally different from elementary and middle. Of the top 5, three are HISD application-only magnets in the Inner Loop. Katy ISD takes 2 of the top 5 with the zoned suburban giants Seven Lakes and Tompkins. The bottom half is more geographically distributed — Sugar Land, Alief, Memorial, Cypress all represented. The Alief ISD presence is notable: Kerr High and Alief Early College both rank in the top 10 despite Alief's broader district reputation, which speaks to how strong specific Alief programs have become.
How to use these rankings
Niche's rankings combine state test scores, college readiness, teacher ratings, parent and student reviews, and a handful of other signals. They're a useful first cut, not a verdict. A few practical notes for relocating Muslim families:
- Zoning matters more than ranking. A house in the Seven Lakes High School zone is a different home (and price) than a house ten blocks east in the Cinco Ranch High School zone. Confirm the zoned schools at any specific address before you sign anything.
- Magnet applications close early. HISD magnet applications open in fall and close in winter for the following school year. Plan ahead if you're targeting Carnegie, HSPVA, or DeBakey.
- District reputation is not school reputation. Alief ISD, for example, is sometimes overlooked by relocating families, but the data shows two of its specialty programs are genuinely top-10 in the metro. Same goes for individual elementary schools within a "lower-rated" district.
- Public school + weekend madrasa is a common path. Many Houston Muslim families pair strong public schools with weekend Islamic education at one of the major mosques. If a full-time Islamic school is what you're after instead, see our directory of Islamic schools.
For families still narrowing down where in Houston to land, our neighborhood guides cover home prices, mosques, halal food, and community density alongside the school landscape for each of our 10 covered areas.
