Top Arab & Middle Eastern Restaurants in Houston
Houston's deepest Arab and Middle Eastern halal restaurants, organized by cuisine: Lebanese, Iraqi, Palestinian, Egyptian, Yemeni, Persian, Afghan, Turkish, and pan-Mediterranean.
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
Houston's Arab and Middle Eastern food scene goes deeper than most cities in the country. The community is large enough — and the immigration history old enough — that you can eat your way through individual countries here without compromising. Yemeni and Iraqi families opened restaurants for their own communities first; Lebanese and Palestinian places have been on Hillcroft for decades; Persian and Afghan kitchens sit a few blocks apart along the same southwest corridor; Turkish and Egyptian options have grown steadily since the 2010s. Add a layer of food trucks doing serious work in Sugar Land and Westchase, and the map is unusually rich.
The food map concentrates along the Hillcroft / Gessner / Richmond Avenue corridor in the southwest — Houston's longest-running Arab commercial strip — and extends out along Westheimer through Alief and Westchase. Sugar Land, the Galleria, and the Rice Village all carry a portion. This guide is organized by cuisine, with one final section for pan-Mediterranean chains and notable picks that don't fit a single label.
Lebanese
Barbar Mediterranean Grill on Westheimer is the standout — its charcoal-grilled chicken and shawarmas are the dishes to order on a first visit, and the garlic sauce is the kind of thing people end up taking home. Farooj Abo Alabed is a global chicken chain that recently opened a Houston location on Westheimer. Cedars Bakery on Richmond Avenue is a smaller bakery-cafe operation in the Hillcroft corridor.
Iraqi
Kabab Shako Mako is one of Houston's most-followed halal food trucks, parked off Westheimer in the Hillcroft area for grilled meats. Dejla Pastry on Westheimer is more of a sweets and pastry shop than a sit-down spot — worth a stop for Iraqi-style desserts and lighter fare.
Palestinian
ALMankal Grill is a long-running Sugar Land food truck known for its grilled fish and mixed grill platters — kebabs, kofta, shish taouk — out of a to-go container on a plastic fork in your car. Al Aseel Grill and Cafe sits in the same Richmond Avenue building as Cedars Bakery and runs a fuller sit-down menu of grills and mezze. Busy Boy runs two locations — the original on Hillcroft and a newer Richmond outpost on Grand Parkway — with a notably broad menu: shawarmas and traditional Middle Eastern alongside dessert crepes and waffles plus American sandwiches and burgers.
Egyptian
Elhelmya Egyptian Restaurant & Catering on Wilcrest in Alief / Westchase is the dedicated Egyptian restaurant in Houston, with a sit-down dining room and a strong catering operation for Egyptian community events.
Yemeni
Sheba on Hillcroft Avenue and Hadramout on Gessner Road anchor Houston's Yemeni dining scene — both are full-service restaurants concentrated in the same southwest corridor that hosts the broader Arab commercial strip. Kabsah Restaurant on Hillcroft Avenue rounds out the category, named after the Yemeni / Saudi rice-and-meat dish that's its house specialty.
Persian
Reza Persian Grill and Bijan Persian Grill sit a few blocks apart on Hillcroft Avenue — both full-service Persian restaurants serving kebabs, stews, and saffron rice in the heart of the Hillcroft strip.
Afghan
Houston's Afghan dining is concentrated along the southwest corridor. Kandahari on Hillcroft Avenue and DarBar Kabab House on S Gessner Road are both in the Hillcroft strip. Chopan Kabob House sits further west on Westheimer in the Westchase area.
Turkish
Houston's Turkish food splits between food trucks and sit-down restaurants. Kebab Time is mobile out of Katy off Fry Road; Istanbul Doner House parks on Westheimer in the Hillcroft area. For a sit-down meal, Ayintap on Hwy 6 in Westchase and Pasha Turkish Restaurant in Rice Village are the picks.
Other Picks
The pan-Mediterranean chains and one local favorite that don't fit cleanly into a single cuisine.
Fadi's Mediterranean Grill is a Houston staple with four locations across the metro — Galleria, Westchase, Memorial, and Sugar Land — with a cafeteria-style line and consistent quality across all four. Dimassi's Mediterranean Buffet runs five buffet-format locations from The Woodlands down to Sugar Land, ideal for large groups and family gatherings. The GrillFather is a Sugar Land food truck on S Texas 6 doing grilled meats.
