Top Pakistani & Indian Restaurants in Houston
Houston's deepest Pakistani and Indian restaurants, organized by dish: breakfast, chaat, nihari, biryani, karahi, BBQ, and buffet.
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
Houston has one of the deepest Pakistani and Indian food scenes in the United States. The South Asian Muslim community here is large enough that restaurants can specialize — there's a place for chaat that doesn't really do biryani, a nihari spot that opens early for the Sunday rush, a karahi house across town from the buffet brunch you'd go to with extended family. The Indo-Pak food map concentrates along three axes: the Hillcroft corridor, the Hwy 6 / Sugar Land stretch, and the Beechnut / Bissonnet line through Alief.
Trying to rank these restaurants overall is a misleading exercise — the picks for Sunday halwa puri don't have much overlap with the picks for nihari at 7am or the picks for a 30-person family iftar buffet. The better question is what dish you're after. This guide is organized by the seven categories Houston families actually think in when they're picking where to go.
Breakfast & Brunch
The weekend Pakistani breakfast scene in Houston splits two ways. Cafe Yasmeen, Karachi Restaurant, and Al Rehmat Sweets all serve halwa puri on weekends — the Sunday-morning staple that draws lines out the door. Cafe Yasmeen and Karachi Restaurant also serve nihari for the early crowd. For families who'd rather sit down to a Sunday brunch buffet than order à la carte, Mai Colachi and Lasbela both run Sunday brunch buffets out of their Sugar Land dining rooms.
Chaat, Snacks & High Tea
Flavorz of Dilpasand runs a dedicated high tea every Thursday from 5–9pm — chaat, samosas, sweets, the full setup, served family-style. The other three picks are cafe-style menus organized around chaat plates, bun kababs, club sandwiches, and other Pakistani snack items — built for a long sit and several rounds of chai. Chai Shai and FiLLi Cafe each run two locations across the Hillcroft and Sugar Land corridors; Bismillah anchors the Hillcroft strip.
Nihari
Nihari is the test case for whether a kitchen really knows what it's doing — slow-cooked overnight, deeply spiced, and very hard to fake. DDK in Sugar Land and Javed Nihari out on Beechnut are the specialist names. Ashar's Kitchen runs both a Sugar Land and a Southwest Freeway / Hillcroft corridor location for accessibility on either side of the metro. Katy Halal Meat & Restaurant rounds out the list with its sit-down side on Fry Road.
Biryani
Three picks across price points and styles. Rizwan Biryani on Westheimer in Alief / Westchase is a focused biryani specialist. ZN Pizza on Bissonnet — yes, the name says pizza — is widely known in the community for its biryani. Aga's in Alief is best known for goat chops and karahi, but its biryani holds up against any specialist on this list.
Karahi
Karahi is a one-pot dish meant to be ordered for the table and shared. Aga's is the heavyweight pick across all karahi cuts. Karahi Boys and Karahi Point have both built their identities around karahi as the flagship dish — Karahi Boys in Sugar Land off Lexington, Karahi Point in Stafford on the Southwest Freeway. Mai Colachi rounds out the list with its broader Pakistani menu where the karahi sits alongside biryani, brunch buffet, and à la carte.
BBQ
Bundu Khan is the classic Pakistani BBQ pick in Houston — chicken tikka, Bihari kebab, fresh paratha, both at the FM 1960 location and the new Sugar Land campus on University Blvd. Meerut BBQ House started as a food truck in Sugar Land and recently opened a sit-down restaurant on Hwy 90 Alt; both are still running. BBQ Boys in Sugar Land rounds out a south-and-west BBQ lineup that's hard to beat.
Buffet
Houston's Pakistani buffet scene is concentrated in Sugar Land and the Hillcroft corridor, with one outlier in north Houston. Mezban on Harwin is a long-running staple in the Hillcroft area. Tempura runs three locations — the original on Hillcroft, the Antoine campus in north Houston, and a newer location on Cypress Creek Pkwy. Mai Colachi and Lasbela run their Sunday brunch buffets, plus ad-hoc buffet nights and special-event setups during the week — call ahead for the latest schedule.
