Living in Cypress as a Muslim
A Muslim home buyer's guide to Cypress: mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, housing, and what to expect.
Cypress is the northwest suburb Muslim families pick for new construction, a strong school district and prices a notch below Katy. Bridgeland and Towne Lake have pulled in a steady stream of young families since the late 2000s, and the Muslim infrastructure is catching up: ISGH is building out the Cypress Islamic Center on Cypress Rosehill Road, ICNA runs an outreach center off Wilks Drive, and the Bear Creek mosques sit just south.
Be honest with yourself about the trade-offs. Cypress is further from everything: downtown is 35–50 minutes down US-290 depending on traffic, and the Southwest Houston restaurant and grocery corridors are 40+ minutes. The Muslim community is real but thinner than in Sugar Land or Katy, and there's no full-time Islamic school in Cypress yet. Families who pick Cypress usually do it for the house and the schools, then build their community life around one masjid.
Popular subdivisions & areas
For this guide, "Cypress" means the Cy-Fair area from the Bridgeland and Towne Lake communities along the Grand Parkway, east through Fairfield and Coles Crossing near US-290, to the older FM 1960 and Jones Road neighborhoods. Our directory files the FM 1960 / Jones Road businesses under Cypress, so we cover them here too.
Bridgeland (off the Grand Parkway and US-290) is the big one, about 11,500 acres of lakes, parks and trails that Howard Hughes has been building since 2006. Homes range from entry-level to $750,000-plus, and newer villages carry the highest MUD rates. Bridgeland HS is the zoned high school for much of it.
Towne Lake (off Barker Cypress Road) is built around a 300-acre private lake, with homes from 2006 onward and a waterfront dining strip at the Boardwalk. Prices run higher than most of Cypress, and lakefront lots add a large premium. It's the closest of the big communities to the Bear Creek mosques.
Fairfield (off US-290 and Mason Road) is an established 2000s community with lower prices per square foot, a big amenity center and a short drive to ICNA's outreach center on Wilks Drive.
Coles Crossing (off Barker Cypress and Fry Road) has paid-off MUD bonds, mature trees and Cy Ranch HS zoning, which makes the carrying cost noticeably lower than in Bridgeland.
Stone Gate and Blackhorse Ranch are golf communities in the same part of Cypress at mid-range prices.
A note on commutes before you pick a pocket. Cypress families who work in the Energy Corridor usually take the Grand Parkway south to I-10, which is about 25–35 minutes from Bridgeland or Towne Lake. Medical Center and downtown commuters take US-290, which has been widened with a managed lane, and should plan on 40–60 minutes at rush hour. If one parent works on the north side near FM 1960 or the Beltway, the east side of Cypress cuts that drive a lot.
Copperfield and the FM 1960 / Jones Road area (77084, 77095, 77065, 77070) is older, 1970s–1990s housing at the lowest prices in this guide. It's close to Al Furqan on Jones Road, Masjid Ar Raheem on FM 1960, and most of the halal restaurants we list for Cypress.
Pricing
Cypress's newer master-planned communities run roughly $175–$215 per square foot in 2026: Bridgeland averaged about $208 per sq ft on active listings in May 2026, while Towne Lake averaged about $175. Fairfield sold around $157 per sq ft, and older Copperfield and FM 1960-area homes come in lower.
The taxes are the catch. Cypress is mostly unincorporated Harris County, so the tax bill is county, Cy-Fair ISD and a MUD, and the MUDs in newer communities are steep. Combined rates run about 3.1%–3.3% in Bridgeland, 2.9%–3.1% in Towne Lake and around 2.7% in Coles Crossing, where the bonds are retired. Bridgeland also charges a 0.5% community enhancement fee on resales. On a $500,000 home, the difference between 2.7% and 3.3% is $3,000 a year. See Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance.
Most of Bridgeland and Towne Lake is in FEMA Zone X (minimal hazard), but check specific parcels, especially in Bridgeland's Creekland and Prairieland villages and in older Coles Crossing sections. Parts of the Cypress Creek watershed flooded during Harvey.
| Subdivision | Year built | Cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Bridgeland | 2006–present | $192–$215 |
| Towne Lake | 2006–present | $170–$190 |
| Coles Crossing | 1990s–2000s | $155–$175 |
| Fairfield | 2000s | $145–$170 |
| Copperfield / FM 1960 area | 1970s–1990s | $125–$150 |

Mosques
Cypress has four mosques of its own in our directory, plus three larger centers just south in Bear Creek that many Cypress families use.
Cypress Islamic Center on Cypress Rosehill Road is the ISGH center for Cypress. The campus has a community center, with the permanent masjid building under construction. It's the natural home masjid for Bridgeland, Towne Lake and Fairfield families.
ICNA Outreach Center on Wilks Drive, off US-290, runs community programming and prayers on the west side of Cypress.
Al Furqan Islamic Education Center on Jones Road is a small storefront masjid that has been running since 2005, and Masjid Ar Raheem (Cyfair Peace Center) on FM 1960 W serves the 1960 corridor.
South of Cypress in Bear Creek, about 15–20 minutes from Towne Lake, are three centers we list under Katy that also serve Cypress: ISGH Bear Creek Islamic Center (Masjid Al-Mustafa) for Sunni families, Katy Jamatkhana on Park Row for Ismaili families, and Mohammedi Masjid Complex for the Dawoodi Bohra community. There's no Shia center in Cypress; Shia families drive 35–45 minutes to Al-Hadi, Al-Ghadeer or IPF.
Islamic schools
Our directory doesn't have a full-time Islamic school in Cypress. Families who want full-time Islamic education drive, and the realistic options are:
- Houston Quran Academy on Baker Road (pre-K–12, the top-ranked Islamic school in the metro on Niche): about 25–35 minutes from Bridgeland or Towne Lake via the Grand Parkway or Hwy 6.
- ILM Academy on Conrad Sauer in Spring Branch (pre-K–8): about 25–30 minutes from the FM 1960 side via US-290 or the Beltway.
- Houston Peace Academy on Old Louetta Road in Spring (pre-K–8): about 15–20 minutes from the FM 1960 / Louetta side, which is why families in Champions and Willowbrook look at it.
Most Cypress Muslim families use Cy-Fair ISD on weekdays and weekend Islamic school and Quran classes at Cypress Islamic Center or Bear Creek. For details on each school, see Islamic Schools in Houston.
Public schools
Cypress is in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, which Niche grades A, with an A+ for diversity and an A for college prep. It's the third-largest district in Texas, with about 118,000 students, so quality varies by zone.
The high schools Muslim buyers ask about most:
- Cypress Woods HS is in the top 10 of our Best Public Schools in Houston high school rankings.
- Bridgeland HS serves much of Bridgeland and ranks around #54 in Texas.
- Cy Ranch HS serves Coles Crossing and parts of Fairfield and Towne Lake.
- Cy-Fair HS carries a Niche A.
The northern and western edges of Cypress can fall into Waller ISD or Tomball ISD, and the Bear Creek area to the south can be in Katy ISD. Confirm the district and attendance zone for each address before you write an offer.
Halal restaurants
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
Most of the halal restaurants we list for Cypress are on the east side, along FM 1960, Jones Road and Louetta Road in the Willowbrook / Vintage Park area. Raja Mediterranean Grill on Jones Road is the top-rated Arab spot. Everest Curry Bar and Grill on Huffmeister and Bundu Khan Kabab House on FM 1960 cover Pakistani and Indian. Tandoori Kabob House on Cypress Creek Parkway and The Kebab Shop on Louetta do Persian-style and Mediterranean kebabs, and The Halal Guys has a Louetta location.
On the west side, Taza Food Style on Cypress Rosehill Road is the closest halal sit-down to Cypress Islamic Center.
There are also halal places along Fry Road and Barker Cypress, closer to Towne Lake and Bridgeland, that our directory currently files under Katy: Cypress Biryani & More, Arabisca, Agababa Mediterranean Grill, Hashtag India and The Naan Guys.

Halal grocery
We list three halal grocers in Cypress. Cypress Grocery and Halal Meat on Barker Cypress is the closest to Towne Lake. Fahad Grocery & Halal Meat on Jones Road and Indo-Pak Grocery & Halal Meat on FM 1960 W cover the east side.
That's thin for a suburb this size, so many Cypress families also shop on FM 529 in Copperfield, where AL KARMA Grocery & Deli and Hira Halal Meat & Groceries are about 10–15 minutes from Towne Lake, or make a monthly run to the bigger Katy grocers on Westheimer Parkway or to Phoenicia on Westheimer.

Parks & activities
Bridgeland and Towne Lake are built around water and trails, so a lot of outdoor time happens at home: Bridgeland's lakes and trail network, and the boardwalk and paddling at Towne Lake. Beyond that:
- The Boardwalk at Towne Lake on Barker Cypress: lakeside restaurants and a promenade. Several restaurants serve alcohol, so check before choosing a table.
- Cypress Creek Park: trails along Cypress Creek, pavilions and open space.
- Zube Park: a playground, fishing pond and model airplane field.
- Telge Park just south in Jersey Village: one of the better-known disc golf courses in the metro.
- Bear Creek Pioneers Park to the south in 77084: picnic areas and sports fields.

Find a real estate agent in Cypress
In Cypress, the difference between two similar houses is often the MUD rate, the flood zone and which side of a school-district line they're on. An agent who can compare a Bridgeland village to Coles Crossing on total carrying cost, and who knows how far each one is from Cypress Islamic Center or Bear Creek, is worth having.
