Living in Hillcroft & Galleria as a Muslim
A Muslim home buyer's and renter's guide to Hillcroft, Gulfton, Sharpstown and the Galleria: mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, HISD, housing, and what to expect.
Hillcroft is the oldest Muslim commercial corridor in Houston, and it still has the densest concentration of halal food in the city. The stretch of Hillcroft Avenue between Westheimer and Bissonnet, plus the Harwin, Bellaire Boulevard and Richmond Avenue blocks around it, holds Pakistani karahi houses, Afghan markets, Persian kebab grills, Arab bakeries and small storefront masjids within a few minutes of each other. Part of Hillcroft is officially designated the Mahatma Gandhi District, and the Arab and Afghan businesses have spread north and west along Richmond Avenue and Westheimer toward Fondren and Gessner.
Two very different housing markets share this hub. To the north are the Galleria and Uptown, with high-rise condos, apartment towers and expensive single-family pockets like Tanglewood and Briargrove. To the south are Gulfton and Sharpstown, with older apartment complexes and 1950s and 1960s ranch homes at some of the lowest prices per square foot inside Beltway 8. Many Muslim newcomers start here as renters because everything halal is close. Fewer families buy here long-term than in Sugar Land or Katy, mostly because of public school ratings and the age of the housing stock.
Popular subdivisions & areas
Galleria and Uptown high-rises (77056 and 77057, around Post Oak, San Felipe and Westheimer) are the condo and luxury apartment market. Galleria condos average around $303 per square foot, with a very wide range: older 1980s towers sell well under $200 per square foot and new towers well above $500. HOA dues are high and should be part of any budget. This works best for couples, empty nesters and professionals who want to walk to the Galleria and drive 10 minutes to Hillcroft for groceries.
Tanglewood and Briargrove (77057 and 77056) are the established single-family neighborhoods just west of the Galleria. Tanglewood averages around $339 per square foot with list prices often above $1.5 million. Briargrove is a little lower, with renovated older homes in the $280 to $350 range and new builds well above that. A small number of Muslim physician and business-owner families live here and use the IEC, Hillcroft shops and Galleria-area restaurants.
Gulfton and the Hillcroft apartment corridor (77081 and 77036, between Hillcroft, Bissonnet and Renwick) is one of the densest apartment areas in Houston and one of its most international. Many newly arrived Afghan, Arab and South Asian Muslim families rent here because the halal markets, masjids and community services are walkable or a short drive. It is mostly renting, not buying. Rents are among the lowest inside the Beltway, but building quality varies a lot, so visit in person and talk to current tenants before you sign a lease.
Sharpstown (77036 and 77074) was one of Houston's first big postwar master-planned suburbs. Median homes are about 1,460 square feet on 8,000 sq ft lots, mostly built around 1959, and sell for roughly $155 to $167 per square foot. Sharpstown has real Muslim presence: several of the small masjids in this hub sit along Bintliff, Hornwood and the Southwest Freeway feeder, and the Hillcroft shops are a few minutes away. It is the best value-for-proximity option here for buyers, with the trade-off that you're buying a 60-year-old house.
The Westheimer-Richmond Arab corridor (77063, between Fondren and Gessner) is where many Arab and Afghan families rent and where the newer Arab markets and bakeries have opened. Housing is a mix of 1970s and 1980s apartments, townhomes and small subdivisions near Briarmeadow and Woodlake.
Renting vs. buying here. A common path for Muslim newcomers is to rent near Hillcroft or in a Galleria apartment for the first year, learn the city, then buy in Sharpstown, Alief, Sugar Land or Katy once the school picture is clear. That is a reasonable plan. If you do want to buy inside this hub, the two stronger long-term bets are single-family homes in Tanglewood or Briargrove, if the budget allows, and well-kept Sharpstown houses, where you get a yard and a 5-minute drive to Hillcroft for a fraction of the price. Older Galleria condos are the riskiest purchase: low prices can come with rising HOA dues, aging building systems and slow resale.
Pricing
This hub has the widest price range of any in our series. Sharpstown homes sell around $155 to $167 per square foot, while Tanglewood averages about $339, and new construction in Briargrove can top $500. Galleria condos average about $303 per square foot but vary widely by building age.
Most of the area is inside the City of Houston with no MUD, so property taxes are generally lower than in Fort Bend master-planned communities. Condo buyers should look hard at HOA dues, reserves and any special assessments, which can matter as much as the price. Older Sharpstown and Gulfton homes need a careful inspection for foundation, cast-iron plumbing and roof age.
Parts of this area, especially near Brays Bayou to the south and around Westpark, have flood history. Check the FEMA zone and ask about past flooding on any address. See Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance.
| Area | Year built | Cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Tanglewood | 1950s–present (many rebuilds) | $320–$360 |
| Briargrove | 1950s–present (many rebuilds) | $280–$560 |
| Galleria / Uptown condos | 1970s–present | $170–$500+ |

Mosques
This hub has many masjids, but most are small storefront or suite musallas in strip centers, built around a specific community: Afghan, Bangladeshi, Somali, Pakistani and others. Daily prayer is easy to catch almost anywhere along Hillcroft. For larger jum'ah and programs, families often go to bigger centers nearby.
Mercy Community Center Masjid and Masjid Al-Amin are both on Hillcroft itself, in the heart of the corridor. Al Noor Masjid on Prestwood Drive serves the Gulfton side. In Sharpstown, Madrasah Islamiah on Bintliff and Masjid Khulafa A Rashedeen on the Southwest Freeway feeder are small Sunni centers. Al Muhajreen on Harwin is another option west of Hillcroft.
For Shia families, the Islamic Education Center (IEC) on South Voss Road is one of Houston's major Shia centers, with daily prayers, Friday programs and Muharram majalis. See the Houston Shia Community Guide.

Islamic schools
Our directory has no full-time Islamic schools inside this hub. The good news is that several are close. Iman Academy Southwest (pre-K–12) and Hijaz Academy (early grades) in the Alief area are about 15 to 20 minutes southwest, Al-Hadi School (the Shia K–12 school) is on Richmond Avenue near Highway 6, and Everest Academy in Stafford is about 20 minutes south. Several of the small masjids in this hub run hifz and weekend Quran programs; ask at the one closest to you.

Public schools
Nearly all of this hub is in Houston ISD, which landed at No. 32 among Houston-area districts in Niche's 2026 rankings and has been under state-appointed governance since 2023. The schools zoned to Gulfton and Sharpstown generally rate lower than the suburban districts in this series, which is the main reason families with school-age kids move out of the area.
Galleria-side neighborhoods like Tanglewood and Briargrove feed better-rated HISD campuses, and Bellaire High School (Niche A) and Lamar High School (Niche B+) are the high schools families in this area most often aim for. HISD magnets like Carnegie Vanguard, DeBakey and Kinder HSPVA are open to any HISD resident by application. Some western edges of 77036 and 77063 may be zoned to Alief ISD instead. Halal restaurants
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
Our directory lists more halal restaurants in this hub than anywhere else in Houston, well over 100. A few starting points:
Barbar Mediterranean Grill on Westheimer is the standout for charcoal chicken and shawarma. Levant BBQ on Westheimer does Texas-style smoked brisket and beef ribs, halal. Kabsah Restaurant on Hillcroft is named for its house specialty, the Yemeni and Saudi rice-and-meat dish. Reza Persian Grill and Darband Shishkabob are on the Hillcroft strip for Persian kebabs and saffron rice. Beikos on the Southwest Freeway is a full Turkish menu. For a special dinner, Musaafer inside the Galleria is a high-end Indian restaurant with a halal menu.
The food-truck lot at 7919 Westheimer is worth its own visit: Turkish döner, Egyptian ta'ameya, Syrian and Iraqi grill trucks and more park there, and it's a good place to take a group where everyone wants something different. For Chinese halal, Ma's House on Bellaire Boulevard is a local favorite.

Parks & activities
This hub is short on big parks compared to the suburbs, so most families combine small neighborhood parks with trips to Memorial Park and Hermann Park. Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park next to Williams Tower in Uptown is a quick evening stop with kids. Levy Park in Upper Kirby, about 10 minutes east, has one of the city's best playgrounds. Burnett Bayland Park on the Gulfton side has sports fields and a playground. Memorial Park is about 10 minutes north via the 610 Loop.
The Galleria itself, with its ice rink, is the default indoor weekend stop.
