Living in the Medical Center & Inner Loop as a Muslim

A Muslim home buyer's and renter's guide to the Texas Medical Center and Houston's Inner Loop: mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, HISD, housing, and what to expect.

Updated October 7, 202610 min read

The Inner Loop is where Houston's Muslim doctors, residents, researchers and grad students live, at least for the first few years. The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world, and a large share of the Muslim professionals who move to Houston arrive with a TMC offer letter. Living within a few miles of Fannin Street means a 10-minute commute instead of an hour on 59 or 288, and for anyone working overnight call, that matters more than square footage.

The trade is real. Homes cost more per square foot than anywhere else in this guide series, yards are small or missing, and the mosques are spread out and mostly modest in size. Full-time Islamic schools are a drive away. Most Muslim families who buy inside the Loop do so for proximity to work and the city, and they accept that weekend Islamic school and Eid prayers may mean a drive to the southwest. Plenty of TMC families rent here for residency or fellowship and then buy in Bellaire, Meyerland or Sugar Land once kids reach school age.

Inside the Loop, "neighborhood" covers everything from 1920s bungalows to 30-story apartment towers. The useful split is between renter-heavy areas next to the medical center and family-buyer areas a few miles west.

South Main and the Medical Center apartment belt (ZIPs 77030 and 77054, along South Main, Holly Hall, Fannin and Old Spanish Trail) is where most residents, fellows and grad students rent. It is mostly mid-rise and garden apartments, many within walking or shuttle distance of the hospitals, and the METRORail Red Line runs along Fannin and Main to downtown. This pocket also has real Muslim infrastructure: Medical Center Islamic Society's New Almeda Masjid on Mansard Street, Al Aqsa International Groceries on Old Spanish Trail and Prime Bazaar on Almeda Road. For a first year in Houston, this is the most practical place to rent.

Braeswood Place and Southgate (77025, just west of the medical center between Kirby and Stella Link) are the closest single-family neighborhoods to TMC. Mostly 1950s ranch homes and newer rebuilds, popular with physicians who want a house and a 5 to 10 minute drive. Single-family homes here mostly sell between $500,000 and $900,000. Parts of Braeswood sit near Brays Bayou and have flood history, so check every address.

Meyerland (77096) offers larger lots and lower prices per square foot than Bellaire next door, but it flooded repeatedly in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Many homes have since been raised or rebuilt. Meyerland can be a good buy for families who do their flood homework; it can also be an expensive mistake.

Bellaire and West University Place (77401 and 77005) are small independent cities surrounded by Houston, with their own police and services, and are among the most expensive areas in the metro. West U averages around $470 to $540 per square foot. Muslim physician families who want a house, a short commute and strong zoned schools often end up in Bellaire. Expect new-construction homes north of $1.5 million.

Montrose, Midtown and the Museum District (77006 and 77004) are the walkable, urban option. Midtown is mostly apartments, condos and townhomes, averaging roughly $207 to $266 per square foot, and is a common choice for single professionals and young couples. Montrose mixes bungalows, townhomes and condos at about $323 per square foot. The Museum District near Rice and Hermann Park runs higher, around $408. These areas suit renters and couples more than families with several school-age kids.

Third Ward and the East Downtown townhome belt (77004, east of 288) have been filling with new three-story townhomes over the past decade, typically around $195 to $245 per square foot. It is close to the medical center and to Al Muhaiman Mosque on Cleburne Street, but it is a gentrifying area with mixed blocks, so walk the street at night before you buy.

River Oaks and Upper Kirby (77019 and 77098) are the high end, with River Oaks Islamic Center on Eastside Street serving the area. Mostly relevant if your budget starts in the high six figures for a condo or seven figures for a house.

Pricing

Inner Loop pricing ranges from about $200 per square foot for Midtown condos and Third Ward townhomes to $500+ in West University. Medical-center-adjacent single-family homes in Braeswood Place sit around $355. The biggest swing factors are flood history, lot size (many buyers are paying for the land, not the house) and whether the home is in a small city like Bellaire or West U.

Taxes are generally lower than in suburban MUD subdivisions, because most homes are inside the City of Houston, Bellaire or West U with no MUD on top. Townhomes and condos carry HOA dues, sometimes several hundred dollars a month for high-rises. See Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance.

Flood risk is the main thing to check. Brays Bayou runs right through Meyerland and Braeswood. Ask whether the home flooded in 2015, 2016 or 2017, check the FEMA zone, and get a flood insurance quote before you make an offer.

Mosques

Inner Loop mosques are mostly modest buildings, and they serve a very mixed congregation: medical students, African American Muslim families who have been in Third Ward and South Park for generations, recent immigrants and downtown workers on their lunch break.

River Oaks Islamic Center on Eastside Street is the best-known Sunni mosque inside the Loop and the usual Friday stop for Upper Kirby, River Oaks and Montrose. Medical Center Islamic Society's New Almeda Masjid on Mansard Street is the closest option for TMC staff and students living along South Main. Islamic Dawah Center on Travis Street downtown is the jum'ah option for downtown office workers; the building was bought and donated by former Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon. Al Muhaiman Mosque on Cleburne Street serves Third Ward.

For Shia families, Masjid Al Rasul on Jensen Drive is north of downtown, and the larger Shia centers (IEC on South Voss and others in the southwest) are a 15 to 25 minute drive. See the Houston Shia Community Guide.

Islamic schools

Our directory has no full-time Islamic schools inside the Loop. This is the biggest gap for families, and the main reason Muslim parents with school-age kids often move outward after a few years.

The closest full-time options are in the southwest: Iman Academy Southwest and Hijaz Academy in the Alief area, Everest Academy in Stafford and Al-Hadi School on Richmond Avenue, all roughly 25 to 35 minutes from the medical center depending on traffic. Most Inner Loop families instead pair public or private school with weekend Quran and Islamic studies at a local masjid. For the full metro list, see Islamic Schools in Houston: A Parent's Guide.

Public schools

The Inner Loop is in Houston ISD, which landed at No. 32 among Houston-area districts in Niche's 2026 rankings. The state took over HISD's governance in 2023, and the district has been through major leadership and policy changes since.

The district average hides a lot of variation. Bellaire High School earns a Niche A and serves Bellaire, Meyerland and nearby neighborhoods. Lamar High School earns a B+ and serves parts of River Oaks, Upper Kirby and West U. HISD's application-only magnets are some of the best high schools in Texas: Carnegie Vanguard, Kinder HSPVA and DeBakey High School for Health Professions all rank in the metro top five in our Best Public Schools in Houston guide. DeBakey is a natural fit for kids of TMC families. Magnet applications open in the fall for the following school year, so plan early.

Halal restaurants

Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.

The Inner Loop's halal scene is scattered rather than concentrated. Rice Village is the most reliable cluster: Pasha Turkish Restaurant on University Boulevard and Istanbul Grill & Deli on Morningside both run full halal Turkish menus. On Westheimer in Montrose, Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine is a long-running cafeteria-style stop. Khyber North Indian Grill on Richmond Avenue covers Pakistani and North Indian, and bōl Indian Kitchen in Midtown is a fast-casual bowl spot near the rail line. Downtown, Abu Omar Halal on Texas Avenue feeds the office lunch crowd.

There are also several halal burger, hot chicken and food-truck spots around Montrose, Midtown and Almeda, including The Halal Guys on Farnham and a few Dave's Hot Chicken locations. For a full sit-down Pakistani or Arab dinner, most Inner Loop families drive 15 minutes to Hillcroft.

Halal grocery

There are four halal grocers in our directory for this hub. Phoenicia Specialty Foods downtown on Austin Street is the big one, a full international market with a strong Arab and Mediterranean selection. Near the medical center, Al Aqsa International Groceries on Old Spanish Trail and Prime Bazaar on Almeda Road carry halal meat and everyday staples. In Montrose, Diwaan8 Groceries on Taft Street is a small Indo-Pak shop with halal meat.

For a bigger Pakistani or Arab grocery run, the Hillcroft markets (Almadina, Droubi's, Global Halal Supermarket) are about 15 minutes west.

Parks & activities

This is where the Inner Loop beats every suburb. Hermann Park, right next to the medical center, has the Houston Zoo, McGovern Lake paddle boats, the Japanese Garden, the miniature train and free shows at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The Museum District around it includes the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts and Children's Museum Houston. Buffalo Bayou Park runs from Shepherd to downtown with trails and kayak rentals at Lost Lake, and Discovery Green downtown has a lake, playgrounds and seasonal ice skating. Levy Park in Upper Kirby has one of the best playgrounds in the city.

Find a real estate agent in the Medical Center & Inner Loop

Inner Loop buying is block by block: flood history on Brays Bayou, HISD attendance zones, HOA rules on townhome compounds and condo towers, and whether a lot is worth more than the house sitting on it. If you're a resident or fellow deciding whether to rent or buy for a three-year stay, an agent who has worked with TMC families can run that math with you honestly.
