Living in Memorial & Energy Corridor as a Muslim
A Muslim home buyer's guide to Memorial and the Energy Corridor: mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, Spring Branch ISD, housing, and what to expect.
Memorial and the Energy Corridor are where a lot of Houston's Muslim engineers, geoscientists and finance people end up when the commute matters more than living next door to the masjid. The area runs along I-10 west of the 610 Loop, from the Memorial Villages out past Beltway 8 to the Energy Corridor office towers around Eldridge Parkway and Highway 6. Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips and dozens of smaller energy firms cluster here, and plenty of Muslim professionals working for them would rather spend 10 minutes on Memorial Drive than 45 on the Westpark Tollway.
The honest trade: this is not Sugar Land. There is no single big mosque that anchors the community, Islamic schools are thin, and you will drive 10 to 20 minutes for most halal groceries. What you get instead is strong public schools in Spring Branch ISD, mature trees, Memorial Park and Terry Hershey Park, and a short drive to Katy's mosques to the west and the Hillcroft and Westheimer halal corridor to the south. Families who pick Memorial usually do so for schools and commute, then build their Muslim life across two or three nearby areas.
Popular subdivisions & areas
Memorial is less a single neighborhood than a band of very different housing stock. Where you land depends mostly on budget and which school district you want.
The Memorial Villages (Bunker Hill, Piney Point, Hunters Creek, Hedwig, Spring Valley and Hilshire Village, mostly ZIP 77024) are small incorporated cities with their own police and large wooded lots. This is the top of the market in west Houston. Older ranch homes get torn down for new custom builds, and prices commonly run past $1.5 million. A small number of Muslim physicians and executives live here, but the Villages are not where most Muslim families start.
Spring Branch (north of I-10, roughly between the Loop and Beltway 8) is the value play. Original 1950s to 1970s ranch homes on 8,000+ sq ft lots sit next to new construction, and the area has a large immigrant population. The Conrad Sauer Drive pocket off I-10 is the closest thing this hub has to a Muslim micro-center: Masjid ElFarouq, ILM Academy and Two Brothers Halal Market sit within a block of each other there. If you want to walk or make a two-minute drive to a masjid and a full-time Islamic school, look at the streets around Conrad Sauer, Hammerly and Long Point first.
Memorial west of the Beltway (Nottingham Forest, Thornwood, Memorial Thicket, Bayou Woods and similar subdivisions in 77079) is the classic 1960s to 1980s Memorial family stock: brick homes, big trees, Terry Hershey Park and the Buffalo Bayou trail at the back fence for many streets. Gul Masjid on Memorial Drive is in this stretch.
Briar Forest and Ashford Forest (south of Buffalo Bayou, ZIP 77077 and 77042 edges) are a step down in price from Memorial proper, with 1970s homes and a lot of townhome and apartment inventory. This is the side closest to the Westheimer restaurant strip between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford, where Qamaria Yemeni Coffee, Fadi's, Shawarma Grill & Cafe and The Halal Guys sit. It also puts you 10 minutes from Phoenicia on Westheimer.
Energy Corridor apartments and townhomes (Eldridge Parkway, Dairy Ashford and the I-10 frontage) are where a lot of newly arrived Muslim professionals rent for the first year. Rent for a two-bedroom runs roughly $1,800 to $2,000 a month. Renting here for a year while you learn which mosque and school fit your family is a sensible move, since the purchase decision between Spring Branch, Memorial and Katy is a big one.
Bear Creek and the Park Row area (77084, west of Highway 6) is technically outside this hub's ZIPs and is usually filed under Katy, but it matters for Memorial families: ISGH Bear Creek Islamic Center, the Bohra Mohammedi Masjid and the Katy Jamatkhana are all there, 10 to 15 minutes from the Energy Corridor towers.
Pricing
Expect a wide spread. Spring Branch averages around $224 per square foot, Memorial subdivisions west of the Beltway sit in the $280 to $350 range, and the Villages run from about $300 to well over $500 per square foot. The broad rule: the closer you get to the Memorial Villages and Memorial High School, the more you pay for the same house.
Property taxes in this part of Harris County are generally lower than in Fort Bend MUD subdivisions, because most homes here sit inside the City of Houston or a Village rather than on a MUD. Budget roughly 2.0% to 2.4% of assessed value depending on district and city. See Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance for how to read a tax bill.
Flooding deserves a serious look here. During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, controlled releases from the Addicks and Barker reservoirs flooded thousands of homes along Buffalo Bayou in the Energy Corridor and Memorial. Ask for the seller's disclosure, check the FEMA flood zone, and ask whether the specific house took water in 2017. A home that flooded and was rebuilt is not automatically a bad buy, but it should be priced like one.
| Subdivision | Year built | Cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Hunters Creek Village | 1950s–present (many rebuilds) | $450–$560 |
| Bunker Hill Village | 1950s–present (many rebuilds) | $340–$380 |
| Spring Valley Village | 1950s–present | $280–$310 |
| Nottingham Forest | 1960s–1980s | $320–$360 |
| Spring Branch (central) | 1950s–1970s + new builds | $200–$250 |
| Ashford Forest / Briar Forest | 1970s–1980s | $170–$280 |

Mosques
Memorial has fewer mosques than the southwest suburbs, and most are small. Families here typically pray daily at the closest musalla and drive to a larger center for jum'ah, programs and Eid.
Masjid ElFarouq on Conrad Sauer Drive in Spring Branch is the most established Sunni option inside the hub, sharing a block with ILM Academy. Gul Masjid on Memorial Drive west of the Beltway is a smaller Sunni masjid that is convenient for families in the 77079 subdivisions.
For a larger community, most Memorial families head west to ISGH Bear Creek Islamic Center (Masjid Al Mustafa) on Coventry Park Drive, 10 to 15 minutes from the Energy Corridor. The Ismaili community uses the Katy Jamatkhana on Park Row, and the Dawoodi Bohra community's Mohammedi Masjid Complex is also on Coventry Park Drive. Expo Mosque at 11322 Westheimer is close to the Briar Forest side and is listed in our Alief / Westchase directory.
For Shia families, the Islamic Education Center (IEC) on South Voss in the Galleria area is about 15 minutes east. See the Houston Shia Community Guide for more.

Islamic schools
Our directory has one full-time Islamic school inside this hub. ILM Academy on Conrad Sauer is a small pre-K through 8th grade Sunni school with a low student-teacher ratio, sitting next to Masjid ElFarouq.
For high school, Memorial families typically look west or south. Houston Quran Academy on Baker Road in Katy runs pre-K through 12 and is roughly 15 to 25 minutes from the Energy Corridor. Al-Hadi School of Accelerative Learning on Richmond Avenue near Highway 6 is the Shia K–12 option, about 15 minutes from most of Memorial. Many families here skip full-time Islamic school entirely, use Spring Branch ISD on weekdays and do weekend Quran and Islamic studies at a nearby masjid.

Public schools
Most of this hub sits in Spring Branch ISD, which Niche grades A- overall. The district's standouts are Memorial High School (Niche A+) and Stratford High School (Niche A), both on the 2025 AP School Honor Roll at the Gold level, plus Spring Branch Academic Institute, a gifted-and-talented magnet that tops our Best Public Schools in Houston rankings. SBISD's quality is uneven north of I-10, so the specific elementary and high school attached to an address matter a great deal.
South of Buffalo Bayou in Briar Forest and parts of the Energy Corridor, homes are zoned to Houston ISD instead, and the far western edge near Highway 6 falls into Katy ISD. Always confirm attendance zones for a specific address.
Halal restaurants
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
The Westheimer strip between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford is where Memorial and Energy Corridor families actually eat. Arab and Mediterranean food is the strongest category: Fadi's Mediterranean Grill (there is also a Fadi's on the I-10 feeder in Memorial City), Shawarma Grill & Cafe on Dairy Ashford, and Arpi's Phoenicia Deli. Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. on Westheimer is a regular stop for Yemeni coffee and pastries after Isha.
For Pakistani and Indian food, Peacock Indian Restaurant on Eldridge Parkway and Paradise Biryani N Grill on Dairy Ashford cover the basics. For fast casual, there is The Halal Guys on Westheimer. If you want more variety, the Hillcroft and Westheimer corridor in the Galleria area is 15 to 20 minutes east and has far more choice.

Halal grocery
This is the weakest category in the hub, and our grocery directory currently has no stores tagged to Memorial / Energy Corridor. Two Brothers Halal Market on Conrad Sauer, next to Masjid ElFarouq, is the closest halal butcher for Spring Branch families. Arpi's Phoenicia Deli on Westheimer sells prepared Mediterranean food and deli items.
For a full weekly shop, most families drive to Phoenicia Specialty Foods at 12141 Westheimer (listed in our Alief / Westchase directory), or to the Hillcroft and Richmond Avenue halal markets, 15 to 20 minutes southeast. Katy-side families also use Katy Halal Meat off Park Row.

Parks & activities
Parks are one of the best reasons to live here. Memorial Park on the east end has the Seymour Lieberman running loop, the Houston Arboretum, the Eastern Glades and the Land Bridge over Memorial Drive. Terry Hershey Park runs along Buffalo Bayou between Beltway 8 and Highway 6 with a paved trail that many 77079 streets back onto. George Bush Park and Bear Creek Pioneers Park sit inside the Barker and Addicks reservoirs to the west, with fields, picnic areas and long trails.
For indoor weekends, Memorial City Mall and CITYCENTRE at I-10 and the Beltway are the default rainy-day stops.

Find a real estate agent in Memorial & Energy Corridor
Buying here means checking school district lines that cut through single subdivisions, Harvey flood history at the street level, and teardown math in the Villages and Spring Branch. An agent who knows where the SBISD, HISD and Katy ISD lines fall, and which streets flooded in 2017, will save you real money.
