Living in North Houston as a Muslim

A Muslim home buyer's guide to North Houston (Spring, Champions, Klein, The Woodlands, Kingwood and Humble): mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, housing, and what to expect.

Updated October 7, 202610 min read

North Houston is the Muslim community's second suburban center, and it gets far less attention than Sugar Land or Katy. The heart of it is the Spring and Champions area around Louetta Road and Kuykendahl, where Masjid Al-Salam and Houston Peace Academy share a campus on Old Louetta Road and a long run of halal restaurants and grocers line Louetta between Kuykendahl and Highway 249. From there the community spreads north to The Woodlands, east to Kingwood and Humble, and south toward FM 1960 and the far-north Houston neighborhoods around Greenspoint.

The appeal is simple: homes cost noticeably less per square foot than in Sugar Land or Katy, several school districts here are strong, and the area is less crowded with buyers. The trade-off is distance. North Houston is a long drive from the Texas Medical Center and the southwest Muslim hubs, and Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) traffic plus I-45 and 249 congestion is a daily fact of life. The families who do well here usually work on the north side already, at ExxonMobil's Spring campus, in The Woodlands, around IAH, or in the Greenspoint and FM 1960 office parks.

North Houston is large, so it helps to think in five pockets.

Champion Forest, Champions and the Louetta corridor (77379 and 77069) is the center of Muslim life on the north side. Masjid Al-Salam (Champions), Masjid Usman and the Louetta Road restaurant strip are all here, and Klein Islamic Center is a short drive north on Kuykendahl. Housing is mostly 1970s to 1990s brick homes with mature trees at some of the lowest prices per square foot in this guide series, roughly $130 to $160. The Champions subdivisions near Champions Drive and FM 1960 are zoned to Cy-Fair ISD, while much of 77379 east of there is Klein ISD. Check the district for each address.

Gleannloch Farms and the Klein/Spring master-planned communities (77379 and 77389) are the newer, larger-home option. Gleannloch is a master-planned golf and equestrian community with lakes and trails, homes from the mid-$200,000s to over $1.75 million, and a median around $161 per square foot. Nearby options along Spring Cypress and Kuykendahl include Windrose and Terranova. These are popular with Muslim families who want newer construction and Klein ISD schools within 10 minutes of Masjid Al-Salam.

Spring along FM 2920, Rayford and Riley Fuzzel (77388, 77373, 77386) is where much of the newer, more affordable construction is. Houston Quran Academy's Spring campus is on FM 2920, and a cluster of halal markets has opened along Rayford and Riley Fuzzel Road east of I-45. School district matters a lot here: parts of 77386 are in Conroe ISD and parts of 77373 and 77388 are in Spring ISD or Klein ISD.

The Woodlands and Creekside Park (77380, 77381, 77382, 77389) are the premium end. The Woodlands is a large master-planned community with its own trails, the Waterway and lots of corporate offices. Creekside Park, on the west side, averages about $268 per square foot and is zoned to Tomball ISD. Most of the rest of The Woodlands is Conroe ISD. The Muslim community here is smaller and more spread out, centered on the ISGH Woodlands Islamic Center on Sawdust Road.

Kingwood, Atascocita and Humble (77339, 77346, 77345) are the northeast option, all in Humble ISD. Kingwood averages around $151 per square foot and Atascocita around $135. Kingwood is known for its wooded greenbelt trails. It was also badly flooded during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 along the San Jacinto River and Lake Houston, so flood history is the first thing to check. The Muslim community here is smaller; Kingwood Islamic Center in Porter is the local masjid.

Far-north Houston: Greenspoint, FM 1960 East and Aldine (77014, 77067, 77090) has older homes and many apartments at the lowest prices in the hub, with Masjid Bilal and Darul Arqam Academy North sharing a campus on Adel Road and Dar E Abbas serving Shia families on Old Walters Road. It is a practical renting area for families who work near IAH, but public school ratings are lower and some blocks have higher crime, so research carefully before buying.

Pricing

North Houston is the most affordable hub in this series for single-family homes. Atascocita, Champion Forest and Kingwood sit around $130 to $155 per square foot, Gleannloch Farms around $161, and Creekside Park in The Woodlands near $268. A 3,000 sq ft family home that would cost $600,000 or more in Sugar Land can be well under $500,000 in Champion Forest or Atascocita.

The usual Houston-suburb caveat applies: many newer subdivisions sit on MUDs, which add to the property tax bill, and master-planned communities carry HOA dues. The Woodlands has its own township tax as well. See Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance.

Check flood history on any home, especially in Kingwood and near Cypress Creek and Spring Creek, which both flooded during Harvey.

Mosques

Masjid Al-Salam (Champions) on Old Louetta Road is the main Sunni center on the north side. It is an ISGH center with a masjid, a multipurpose hall and Houston Peace Academy on the same campus, and it has been adding a two-story school building. Most Champion Forest and Klein families pray jum'ah here.

Klein Islamic Center on Kuykendahl Road in Spring serves the Klein and FM 2920 side. Masjid Usman on Louetta Road is a smaller musalla right on the restaurant strip. Further south, Masjid Bilal ISGH on Adel Road shares its campus with Darul Arqam Academy North and serves far-north Houston, and Haj Nabih Masjid on Sylvanfield Drive is another option in 77014.

For Shia families, Dar E Abbas on Old Walters Road is the main Shia center on the north side. See the Houston Shia Community Guide.

The Woodlands and Kingwood each have a local masjid that isn't in our directory yet: the ISGH Woodlands Islamic Center on Sawdust Road and Kingwood Islamic Center in Porter.

Islamic schools

North Houston has three full-time Islamic schools in our directory, a better selection than most hubs outside the southwest.

Houston Quran Academy Spring on FM 2920 is the north-side campus of HQA, which is the highest-ranked Islamic school in the metro on Niche. It runs pre-K through 12. Houston Peace Academy on the Masjid Al-Salam campus is a small pre-K through 8th grade school with a Montessori early program and a very low student-teacher ratio. Darul Arqam Academy North on the Masjid Bilal campus on Adel Road runs pre-K through 12.

Many families here also use public school plus weekend Islamic school at Masjid Al-Salam or Klein Islamic Center. See Islamic Schools in Houston: A Parent's Guide.

Public schools

North Houston covers several districts, and the differences between them are large.

  • Klein ISD (Niche A-) covers much of Champion Forest, Gleannloch Farms and the Kuykendahl corridor. This is the district most Muslim families on the Louetta side aim for.
  • Tomball ISD covers Creekside Park and parts of the northwest edge. Several Tomball ISD elementary and junior high schools rank in the metro top ten in our Best Public Schools in Houston guide.
  • Conroe ISD (Niche A) covers most of The Woodlands.
  • Humble ISD (Niche A) covers Kingwood, Atascocita and Humble.
  • Cy-Fair ISD covers the Champions subdivisions near FM 1960 and Champions Drive.
  • Spring ISD and Aldine ISD cover parts of the FM 1960 East, Greenspoint and I-45 corridor. These districts rate lower overall; Spring High School, for example, has a Niche C-.

District lines here can split a single ZIP code, so confirm the zoned schools for any address before you buy.

Halal restaurants

Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.

Louetta Road between Kuykendahl and Highway 249 is the north side's halal strip, with Turkish, Arab, Pakistani and fast-casual spots in a few miles. Yucca Grill Turkish Cuisine and Zara's Mediterranean Kitchen are sit-down Mediterranean options on Louetta. Kohinoor Restaurant on Kuykendahl, next to Kohinoor Grocery, covers Pakistani and Indian, and Wok & Karahi on FM 2920 does halal Indo-Chinese next to karahi. In The Woodlands, Ta'bleyah on Sawdust Road is the Arab and Mediterranean pick. On the Humble side, Curry and Grill on FM 1960 East is a well-rated Pakistani and Indian stop.

Louetta also has a run of food trucks and fast-casual halal spots, including Karachi Darbaar, Khan Baba and Main Bird Hot Chicken.

Parks & activities

North Houston has more trees and trails than any other hub. The Woodlands Waterway and Town Green Park have a splash pad, water taxis and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion nearby. The Spring Creek Greenway is a long connected trail along Spring Creek. In Humble, Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center has forest trails and a nature center, and Mercer Botanic Gardens is free and has a bamboo grove. Kingwood residents use the neighborhood greenbelt trails that wind through the community.

Find a real estate agent in North Houston

North Houston buying comes down to school district lines that cut through ZIP codes, MUD tax rates, Harvey flood history along Cypress Creek, Spring Creek and Lake Houston, and how far you're willing to drive to Masjid Al-Salam or Klein Islamic Center. An agent who knows the Klein, Tomball, Conroe and Humble ISD boundaries can save you from an expensive surprise.
