Living in Alief & Westchase as a Muslim
A Muslim home buyer's guide to Alief & Westchase: mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, housing, and what to expect.
Alief and Westchase are inside the city of Houston, and they have more Muslim institutions per square mile than any of the suburbs. Our directory lists 14 mosques here (Sunni, Shia and Ismaili), three full-time Islamic schools including Al-Hadi and Iman Academy Southwest, and close to 80 halal restaurants. Aga's is on Wilcrest. Phoenicia is on Westheimer. If you want to be able to walk out of jum'ah and into a karahi lunch without getting on a freeway, this is the area.
The trade is housing and schools. Most of Alief's housing stock is from the 1970s and 1980s, and the public schools are a step below Katy or Fort Bend on the rankings, though Alief ISD has some strong programs. Westchase, to the north, is a mix of office towers, apartments, and a few established single-family neighborhoods that cost more than Alief. What you get here is location: 20–30 minutes to downtown, the Galleria and the Energy Corridor, and lower prices per square foot than almost anywhere else on the west side.
Popular subdivisions & areas
This hub covers two different places. Alief is the residential area south of Westpark and west of the Beltway, centered on Bellaire Boulevard, Bissonnet, Beechnut and W Bellfort. Westchase is the business district and the neighborhoods around it, between Westheimer and Westpark, from roughly Gessner to Hwy 6.
Bellaire West and the Alief core (77072, 77099) are the entry point: late-1960s to 1980s brick homes, mostly 1,400–1,900 sq ft, at around $145–$175 per sq ft. The Wilcrest / W Bellfort / S Course Drive pocket is home to Aga's, the ISGH Savoy musallah, Al-Ghadeer and IPF, so it's practical for families who want daily prayers and groceries within a few minutes' drive.
Mission Bend (77083, off Hwy 6 and Bellaire) is 1970s–80s suburban housing on the Fort Bend line, around $150 per sq ft. It's close to Iman Academy Southwest and Hijaz Academy on the Hwy 6 / Beechnut side, and to Masjid Hamza (which we cover in our Richmond guide).
Royal Oaks Country Club (77082, off Westheimer and Royal Oaks Club Drive) is the upmarket option: a guard-gated golf community of about 850 homes built from 1999 to the 2010s, selling around $250–$275 per sq ft. It's a few minutes from Al-Hadi School and a short drive to Makkah Masjid and Masjid Al Ihsan.
Walnut Bend and Briargrove Park (77042, roughly north of Westheimer between Gessner and Wilcrest) are 1960s neighborhoods with big lots and mature trees. Walnut Bend sells around $230 per sq ft; Briargrove Park's larger, often remodeled homes go higher. They're among the more central addresses in this guide, with quick access to the Beltway, I-10 and the Galleria. These neighborhoods are zoned to Houston ISD rather than Alief ISD.
Westchase townhomes and condos along Westheimer, Richmond and Briar Forest are the lowest-cost way into the area for singles, young couples and families waiting to buy a larger house.
Commutes are the other reason people choose this area. From Westchase, the Energy Corridor is about 15–20 minutes up the Beltway or Hwy 6, the Galleria is 20–25 minutes, and the Medical Center is about 25–35 minutes via US-59 or the Beltway and Braeswood. From the Alief core, downtown is 25–35 minutes outside rush hour. For two-income families with one job in the Energy Corridor and one in the Medical Center, Alief and Westchase put both within a reasonable drive, which Katy and Cypress can't.
Pricing
Alief's single-family homes averaged about $145 per sq ft on active listings in 2025, with typical prices in the $240,000–$300,000 range. Westchase-area single-family runs much higher, from about $230 per sq ft in Walnut Bend to $250–$275 in Royal Oaks.
Because Alief and Westchase are inside Houston city limits, your tax bill includes the City of Houston, Harris County and the school district, usually without the MUD overlay that suburban master-planned communities carry. Royal Oaks does carry its own HOA and club costs. Overall effective rates tend to run lower than in Cypress or Katy's newer communities. See Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance.
Older homes mean older roofs, foundations and plumbing, so budget for inspections and repairs. Some streets near Brays Bayou and Keegans Bayou have flooding history, so check the FEMA zone and ask about past claims on any specific house.
| Subdivision | Year built | Cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Oaks Country Club | 1999–2015 | $250–$290 |
| Briargrove Park | 1963–1970s | $250–$310 |
| Walnut Bend | 1964–1970 | $220–$240 |
| Mission Bend | 1970s–80s | $145–$160 |
| Bellaire West / Alief core | late 1960s–1980s | $140–$175 |

Mosques
Alief and Westchase have the deepest mosque map in this series of neighborhood guides, and every major madhab in Houston has a presence here.
The Islamic Institute & Houston Blue Mosque on W Bellfort was founded in 2001 by the Raindrop House Foundation. The congregation is largely Turkish but mixed, and the building doubles as a cultural center with Quran classes for kids, sports facilities and tea after prayers.
ISGH Masjid Savoy Wilcrest is the ISGH musallah on Wilcrest, in the same center as Savoy Restaurant and Savoy Supermarket. Makkah Masjid Greater Houston on S Dairy Ashford, Masjid Al Ihsan on Westpark and the Tajweed Institute Masjid on Westheimer serve the western half of the hub. Smaller Sunni centers include Muhammadi Masjid on Corona Lane, Masjid ul Mumineen on Benning Drive, Expo Mosque on Westheimer, and the Houston branch of NASFAT, a Nigerian Muslim organization, on Bissonnet.
For Shia families, Al-Ghadeer Islamic Center and the Islamic Propagation Foundation (Masjid Al-Rasool Al-Akram) sit one block apart on S Course Drive. Between them they handle a large share of Houston's weekly Shia programming; see our Houston Shia Community Guide.
Brooklet Jamatkhana on Brooklet Drive serves the Ismaili community.

Islamic schools
Three full-time Islamic schools are in this hub, more than in any other neighborhood we cover.
Iman Academy Southwest on Hwy 6 runs K–12 and ranks #35 among Houston-area private schools on Niche, with a 4-to-1 student-teacher ratio.
Al-Hadi School of Accelerative Learning on Richmond Avenue is Houston's only Shia full-time school, K–12, ranked #64 on Niche, and known for its Future City Competition record, including the 2021 national grand prize.
Hijaz Academy on Beechnut is a small school for pre-K through early elementary, useful for families who want an Islamic setting for the early years.

Public schools
Most of this hub is in Alief ISD, which Niche grades B overall, with an A for college prep and an A- for diversity. The district does something unusual with high schools: instead of zoning by neighborhood, it assigns 7th graders to Elsik, Hastings or Taylor HS by random draw. Students can also apply to Kerr HS and Alief Early College HS, both in the top 10 of our Best Public Schools in Houston high school rankings. For motivated students, those two programs are the strongest public option in the area.
The Westchase neighborhoods north of Westheimer, including Walnut Bend and Briargrove Park, are in Houston ISD. Royal Oaks and parts of Mission Bend have their own zoning (Alief ISD and Fort Bend ISD respectively), so check each address.
Halal restaurants
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
Alief and Westchase have the widest range of halal food in this series. Some clusters to know:
Wilcrest and W Bellfort is the Pakistani core. Aga's Restaurant & Catering on Wilcrest is the community institution, and our Pakistani & Indian roundup calls it the heavyweight pick for karahi. Cafe Taj, Diwan, Nukkad Dhaba and Hyderabadi Chai & Grill are all within a mile, and Savoy Restaurant is in the Savoy center.
Westheimer between Gessner and Hwy 6 is the Persian and Arab strip: Avesta Persian Middle Eastern and Kasra Persian Grill, Shandez Persian Grill on Wilcrest, Shah's Halal Food, Rizwan Biryani and Lotus Indian Restaurant. Elhelmya on Wilcrest is one of the few Egyptian kitchens in the city, and Dakar Street Food on Walnut Bend does Senegalese.
Beechnut near Hwy 6 has a food-truck lot at 14625 Beechnut with Peshawar Grill, Angithi BBQ, Hen N Bun and Chaiwala, next to Barakah Asian Cafe and Al-baik Shawrma.
Ayintap on Hwy 6 is the Turkish pick.

On Wilcrest, Acacia International Grocery and Turk Marketi are next door to each other near W Bellfort, and Tehran Supermarket further north on Wilcrest is the Persian grocer. Royal Halal Meat & Fish on Bissonnet is the dedicated butcher, and Savoy Supermarket and Deshi Grocery cover Pakistani and Bangladeshi staples.

Parks & activities
Alief and Westchase don't have the private amenity centers of the master-planned suburbs, so city and county parks do more of the work:
- Arthur Storey Park off the Beltway and Bellaire: one of the most-used parks in southwest Houston, with a walking loop, splash pad, playground, pavilions and fishing ponds.
- Terry Hershey Park to the north along Buffalo Bayou: a paved trail between the Beltway and Hwy 6, popular for running and cycling.
- George Bush Park to the west on Westheimer Parkway: trails, sports fields and open space in the Barker Reservoir.
- Alief Community Park off Alief Clodine: sports fields and a playground.
The Galleria, Houston's museums and Hermann Park are 20–30 minutes east. See Best Parks in Houston by Neighborhood and Best Weekend Activities for Muslim Families in Houston.
