Living in Katy as a Muslim
A Muslim home buyer's guide to Katy: mosques, halal food, Islamic schools, housing, and what to expect.
Katy is where a lot of Muslim families land when Katy ISD is the first line on their checklist. The district is the main draw, and the community followed it: there are now Sunni masjids on both sides of I-10, an Ismaili jamatkhana and a Bohra masjid off Park Row, the Houston Quran Academy on Baker Road, and a Mason Road strip lined with Arab bakeries and grills.
The trade-off is distance. Katy is big, and "Katy" covers everything from 1970s Bear Creek ranch houses inside Beltway-adjacent 77084 to brand-new builds out past the Grand Parkway. Downtown Houston is 35–50 minutes away depending on I-10 traffic, and the older Hillcroft restaurant strip is a real drive. Day to day, though, you can do Friday prayer, a halal meat run, and school pickup without leaving the west side.
Popular subdivisions & areas
Katy splits into two practical halves for Muslim buyers: the master-planned communities south of I-10 (mostly 77450 and 77494), and the older, more affordable pockets north of I-10 around Clay Road, Fry Road and Park Row (77449 and 77084).
Cinco Ranch (off Mason Road, Fry Road and Westheimer Parkway) is the default answer. It's a large master-planned community built in sections from the early 1990s onward, so the same name covers older eastern villages and much newer, larger homes in Cinco Ranch Northwest and Southwest. The Mason Road corridor along its eastern edge is where Katy's halal restaurant and grocery density sits. Zoning splits mainly between Cinco Ranch HS and Seven Lakes HS.
Seven Meadows (off Westheimer Parkway and Grand Parkway) is a quieter, golf-course community with late-1990s and 2000s builds, zoned to Tompkins HS. It's a short drive to the Westheimer Parkway grocery cluster and to Masjid Aqsa on Saddlehorn Trail.
Grand Lakes (between Westheimer Parkway and Fry Road) is the established mid-tier: mature landscaping, lakes, and Seven Lakes HS zoning. Agents often show it to families who want the Seven Lakes feeder without Cinco Ranch Northwest pricing.
Elyson and Cane Island (north of I-10 off FM 1463 and Katy-Hockley area) are where new construction is happening now. Builder pricing has been running around $175–$200 per sq ft, and these communities draw younger Muslim families who want a new build in Katy ISD.
Falcon Ranch and Pine Mill Ranch (off Fry Road and Westheimer Parkway) are mid-priced 2000s-era communities, zoned to Mayde Creek HS and Tompkins HS respectively.
North Katy and Bear Creek (77449 and 77084, around Clay Road, Fry Road, Franz Road and Park Row) are the budget end. Housing is older (Bear Creek Village dates to the late 1970s and early 1980s), prices per square foot run well below Cinco Ranch, and the mosque access is the best in Katy: ISGH Bear Creek, Masjid Al Ahad, the Minhaj ul Quran center on Franz Road, Katy Jamatkhana and Mohammedi Masjid are all here. Some of these streets are zoned to Cy-Fair ISD rather than Katy ISD, so check every address.
Westheimer Lakes North and Tamarron (south and west toward Fulshear) carry Katy mailing addresses but are zoned to Lamar CISD, not Katy ISD. That's not a dealbreaker, but it surprises buyers who assumed every Katy address meant Katy ISD.
Cross Creek Ranch sits on the Fulshear border and is covered in our Richmond guide.
Pricing
Katy's master-planned communities south of I-10 run roughly $175–$200 per square foot in 2026, with Cinco Ranch averaging about $193 per sq ft across active listings early in the year. North of I-10, older stock in 77449 and 77084 sells for noticeably less per square foot.
Property taxes matter as much as the sticker price. Katy straddles Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties, and most master-planned communities sit on a MUD. Total effective rates in Cinco Ranch and Grand Lakes run about 2.1%–2.6% of assessed value, while newer communities with young MUDs run higher. On a $550,000 home, that's roughly $11,500–$14,500 a year before HOA dues. For the full breakdown, see Houston Property Taxes, HOAs & Homeowners Insurance.
Flooding is the other Katy-specific line item. Parts of Cinco Ranch near the Barker Reservoir pool, including Canyon Gate, flooded during Harvey in 2017. Grand Lakes was built above the Addicks pool elevation and saw little impact. Pull the FEMA flood map and the seller's disclosure on any specific lot.
| Subdivision | Year built | Cost per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Cinco Ranch | 1991–present | $178–$201 |
| Seven Meadows | late 1990s–2000s | $185–$200 |
| Grand Lakes | 1990s–2000s | $170–$190 |
| Firethorne | 2000s–2010s | ~$173 |
| Elyson | 2016–present | $175–$200 |
| Falcon Ranch | 2000s | $150–$175 |
| Bear Creek Village (77084) | late 1970s–1980s | $130–$155 |

Mosques
Katy has more mosque options than most newcomers expect, though they're spread out. Most of the density is north of I-10.
Masjid Aqsa (Katy Islamic Center) on Saddlehorn Trail is the ISGH center serving south Katy and Cinco Ranch. If you live in the master-planned communities south of I-10, it's likely your closest jum'ah.
MAS Katy Center (Masjid Al Rahman) on Baker Road has been running since 2006 and sits next door to the Houston Quran Academy. It's a youth-heavy center with scouting, sports and Quran programs, and many HQA families pray here.
ISGH Bear Creek Islamic Center (Masjid Al-Mustafa) on Coventry Park Drive serves Bear Creek and north Katy, and draws from Cypress too.
North of I-10 there are also smaller Sunni centers: Masjid Al Ahad on Clay Road, the Minhaj ul Quran Islamic Center on Franz Road, and Flaah Islamic Center on Jackrabbit Road toward Copperfield.
For other madhabs: Katy Jamatkhana on Park Row serves the Ismaili community, and Mohammedi Masjid Complex on Coventry Park Drive is the Dawoodi Bohra masjid. Katy does not have a Shia center; Shia families typically drive 25–30 minutes to Al-Hadi, Al-Ghadeer or IPF in Alief, as covered in our Houston Shia Community Guide.
Islamic schools
Katy has one full-time Islamic school in our directory, and it's a strong one. Houston Quran Academy on Baker Road is the highest-ranked Islamic school in the Houston metro on Niche (#11 among area private schools in our Islamic schools guide) and runs pre-K through 12th grade, with Quran and hifz built into the day.
Beyond HQA, families on the north side sometimes look at ILM Academy on Conrad Sauer (Spring Branch, K–8, roughly 20–25 minutes from north Katy), and Shia families drive to Al-Hadi School on Richmond Avenue (20–30 minutes). Most Katy Muslim families with kids in Katy ISD run a hybrid: public school on weekdays, weekend Islamic school and Quran at Masjid Aqsa, MAS Katy or Bear Creek.

Public schools
Most of Katy is in Katy ISD, which Niche grades A+ and ranks No. 1 in the Houston area for 2026, the fifth year running. It ranks No. 10 in Texas overall and is the top-ranked large district in the state. Katy ISD schools take most of the top spots in our Best Public Schools in Houston rankings, led by Seven Lakes HS and Tompkins HS.
The high school zones that come up most often in Muslim home searches are Seven Lakes, Tompkins, Cinco Ranch, Jordan, Taylor and Mayde Creek.
Two boundary warnings. Parts of north Katy and Bear Creek (77084, 77449) are in Cy-Fair ISD (Niche A), and some newer communities toward Fulshear, including Westheimer Lakes North and Tamarron, are in Lamar CISD. A Katy mailing address doesn't guarantee Katy ISD, so have your agent confirm the attendance zone for every home you're serious about.
Halal restaurants
Halal status is based on each business's own representation and may change without notice. We do not independently verify halal claims and take no responsibility if a restaurant changes its sourcing or menu. Always verify directly with the restaurant before dining.
Katy's halal food leans Arab and Mediterranean more than Sugar Land's does. The center of gravity is South Mason Road between I-10 and Westheimer Parkway, where Karam Grill & Bakery, Ephesus Mediterranean Grill, Kasiun, Dalia, Alrawshe, Kabob Korner and Saffron Kabob House sit within a few minutes of each other. Karam is the one to start with: grill plates, fresh bread and pastries under one roof.
For Pakistani and Indian, Royal Biryani House and Charcoal Eats on the FM 1463 / Westheimer Lakes side cover biryani and grills. North of I-10, Khan BBQ & Grill on West Little York does Pakistani barbecue near the Bear Creek mosques. Turan Uyghur Kitchen on the Grand Parkway is the unusual one: hand-pulled noodles and lamb from a cuisine most Houstonians haven't tried.
For a special occasion, Tourão on the I-10 frontage road is the halal Brazilian churrascaria. Note that it serves alcohol and has a few non-halal items on the menu; our halal steakhouses guide covers how they handle it.

Halal grocery
Katy has two real grocery clusters. On Westheimer Parkway in the 25600–25700 block, Tawakkul Grocers, Maharaja Bazar, Maryam Halal Meat and Bazaar Istanbul sit in neighboring centers, which makes it easy to shop South Asian and Turkish in one trip. On South Mason Road, Tayyaba Grocers & Halal Meat and AL-Rahman Halal Meat cover Cinco Ranch.
North of I-10, Al Tawil Grocery and Halal Meats on Clay Road and Andalucia Mediterranean Grocery on Morton Road are the Arab-grocery picks, and New Awami Markaz on Hwy 6 serves the Bear Creek side. For Eid al-Adha, Mercy Halal Farm on Porter Road is where some Katy families arrange qurbani.

Parks & activities
Most Katy master-planned communities have their own pools, lakes and trails, so a lot of daily outdoor time happens inside the subdivision. For bigger outings:
- George Bush Park on Westheimer Parkway: a huge Harris County park in the Barker Reservoir with trails, sports fields and a model airplane field.
- Mary Jo Peckham Park in Old Katy: indoor and outdoor pools, mini-golf, a fishing pond and a playground.
- Katy Park: the youth sports hub, with soccer and baseball fields.
- Willow Fork Park in Cinco Ranch: shaded trails along Willow Fork Bayou.
- Bear Creek Pioneers Park in 77084: picnic areas, sports fields and a small wildlife habitat, close to the north Katy mosques.
- Typhoon Texas off I-10: the waterpark for summer weekends.

Find a real estate agent in Katy
Katy buyers have to sort out three counties, three school districts and dozens of MUDs, and the Harvey flood history varies street by street. An agent who knows which side of the Katy ISD / Cy-Fair ISD line a Bear Creek street falls on, and how far each subdivision is from Masjid Aqsa or MAS Katy, will save you time and money.
